Membunuh atau dibunuh. Itulah aturan sederhana dari acara tahunan Hunger Games. Di suatu masa depan, Amerika Utara musnah lalu berdirilah negara Panem dengan Capitol sebagai ibu kota. Awalnya, Capitol dikelilingi 13 distrik. Namun, suatu ketika terjadi pemberontakan melawan Capitol dan berakibat musnahnya Distrik 13. Sebagai pengingat akan kekuasaan ibu kota, Capitol mengadakan acara televisi The Hunger Games setiap tahun di mana satu anak laki-laki dan satu anak perempuan berumur 12 hingga 18 tahun dari setiap distrik dipilih untuk bertarung sampai mati. Dua puluh empat peserta setiap tahun dan hanya akan ada satu pemenang. Acara tersebut disiarkan live di seluruh Panem.
